About Parque Natural Das Fragas do Eume

Parque Natural Das Fragas do Eume is located in the autonomous region of Galicia, in northwestern Spain. Established in 1997, it encompasses approximately 9,000 hectares of ancient temperate Atlantic forest, known locally as 'fragas'. This protected natural area is centered around the Eume River Valley, where steep slopes and narrow gorges host lush vegetation dominated by native oak, chestnut, and laurel trees. The park’s dense canopy and humid microclimate support diverse fauna including wild boar, roe deer, otters, and numerous bird species, making it a vital refuge for wildlife. The park also boasts cultural landmarks such as the historic Monastery of Caaveiro, a 10th-century religious site nestled within the forest and accessible via well-maintained hiking trails. Visitors to the park enjoy over 50 kilometers of marked trails ranging from easy valley walks to more challenging mountain routes, with scenic river views, waterfalls, and natural pools. The park’s atmosphere is tranquil and perfect for nature photography, birdwatching, and mountain biking. Access points are spread across multiple municipalities including As Pontes and Monfero, with facilities providing educational resources on conservation efforts and local heritage. The park’s varied landscape—featuring riverine corridors, steep cliffs, and dense woodland—makes it a unique ecosystem in Northern Spain and an essential area for biodiversity conservation.
